In Wegner's Footstepsby Visit Rømø & Tønder
Smedegade 12, 6270 Tønder
Danish
Tønder formed the setting for the world-famous furniture architect Hans J. Wegner's upbringing. It was here that he was born, and here he received the carpentry training that shaped his basic idea that design should have a strong base in the craft.
We walk through Tønder and visit some of the places where Wegner traveled during the years he lived in Tønder.
Wegner was born in 1914 in Smedegade opposite Tønder Kristkirke, where his father Peder Wegner ran a shoemaker's workshop. A workshop that was an integral part of the family's life, and where the young Hans got an early taste for wood and craftsmanship.
We also pass by Vidåen, which was one of the places where the young Hans often sat and carved small sculptures in wood, and which later formed the inspiration for several of his well-known furniture, including the Fish Cabinet — one of his most well-known and admired furniture.
On the tour you can also hear a little about some of Wegner's famous furniture. And about the plans for a future Museum Wegner on the farm Hestholm just outside Tønder.
We end by visiting the brothers Bo and Anders Jacobsen's private collection of rare Wegner furniture in Møbelhuset 2.
